  1. Oh now you make me think of my five. But I only have four. And these are all real places I have been:

November 22, 1963 - Pres. Kennedy shot while riding in an open car during a parade in his honor in Dallas, about 20 minutes after passing by my first-grade class (the nuns had taken us in a bus to see the first Catholic president in the flesh).

May 18, 1980 - Mount St. Helens erupts, covering Portland, Ore., with remarkable amounts of ash and destroying my friend's foam rubber puppets, including one of a human-sized lobster, at a downtown art fair.

One night in 1986: Iggy Pop hops on a ceiling-mounted speaker at D.C.'s 9:30 Club, and the speaker starts to pull away from the ceiling. Those of us right under it hope it falls so we can die happy.

December 1987 - Mikhail Gorbachev, in DC for historic Cold War-ending summit, jumps out of limo on a busy Connecticut Ave. sidewalk and starts shaking hands with passers-by, trailed by utterly frantic U.S. and Russian secret service agents.
